Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About PMU

General Questions

What is permanent makeup (PMU)?
Permanent makeup, also known as cosmetic tattooing or micropigmentation, is a technique that uses specialized pigments deposited into the skin to enhance facial features. Unlike traditional tattoos, PMU uses pigments designed to fade gradually over time (1-3 years), allowing for adjustments as trends and preferences change. Common procedures include microblading for brows, lip blush, and permanent eyeliner.
How long does permanent makeup last?
Results typically last 1-3 years depending on several factors:
  • Skin type: Oily skin tends to fade faster than dry skin
  • Sun exposure: UV rays accelerate fading
  • Skincare routine: Products with AHAs, retinol, and exfoliants can speed up fading
  • Individual metabolism: Faster metabolisms may break down pigment more quickly
  • Aftercare compliance: Proper aftercare ensures longer-lasting results
Annual touch-ups are recommended to maintain optimal results.
Is permanent makeup painful?
We use medical-grade topical anesthetics to minimize discomfort. Most clients describe the sensation as:
  • Brows: Light scratching or pressure (pain level: 2-3/10)
  • Lips: Mild tingling or vibrating sensation (pain level: 3-4/10)
  • Eyeliner: Slight tickling (pain level: 2-3/10)
Pain tolerance varies by individual, but most clients find the procedure much more comfortable than expected. We continuously apply numbing during the procedure to keep you comfortable.
Who is NOT a good candidate for PMU?
PMU may not be suitable if you:
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have hemophilia or blood clotting disorders
  • Are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation
  • Have uncontrolled diabetes
  • Have taken Accutane in the past 12 months
  • Have active skin conditions in the treatment area (eczema, psoriasis, active acne)
  • Are prone to keloid scarring
  • Are under 18 years old
We conduct a thorough consultation to ensure your safety before any procedure.

Microblading & Brows

What's the difference between microblading and microshading?
Microblading: Creates hair-like strokes using a handheld tool. Best for clients with normal to dry skin who want a natural, feathered look.

Microshading: Uses a machine to create a soft, powdery effect similar to filled-in brows. Better for oily skin types as it tends to last longer and heal more predictably.

Combination/Hybrid: Combines both techniques for the most natural-looking, dimensional result. We recommend this for most clients.
How do you determine my brow shape?
We use the Golden Ratio (Phi) mapping technique combined with:
  • Your facial bone structure analysis
  • Existing brow hair pattern
  • Your personal style and preferences
  • Eye shape and symmetry assessment
The shape is drawn on and approved by you before any pigment touches your skin. We believe in collaborative design - you have full control over the final look.
Will my microblading look natural?
Yes! Natural-looking results are our specialty. We achieve this through:
  • Custom color mixing to match your natural hair
  • Creating strokes that follow your natural hair growth pattern
  • Using varying stroke lengths and directions for dimension
  • A conservative approach - we can always add more, but can't take away
Immediately after the procedure, brows will appear darker and bolder. They soften by 30-40% during healing for a natural finish.

Lip Blush

What is lip blush and how is it different from lip filler?
Lip Blush: A cosmetic tattoo that enhances lip color and defines shape. It deposits pigment into the lips to add color, correct asymmetry, and improve definition. It does NOT add volume.

Lip Filler: An injectable treatment that adds volume and fullness to lips using hyaluronic acid.

Many clients combine both treatments - getting lip filler first for volume, then lip blush for color and definition.
Can lip blush correct dark or uneven lip color?
Yes! Lip neutralization is a popular treatment for clients with naturally dark or pigmented lips. The process involves:
  • Session 1: Color correction to neutralize dark tones (typically using orange/coral tones)
  • Session 2: Application of desired final color
This is particularly popular among our Middle Eastern and South Asian clients. The result is beautifully even, naturally-tinted lips.
How long does lip healing take?
Lip healing timeline:
  • Days 1-3: Swelling and intense color (lips will look very bold)
  • Days 3-7: Peeling begins - DO NOT pick at flakes
  • Days 7-14: Color appears lighter, "milky" or faded
  • Weeks 4-6: True color emerges after full healing
Initial swelling is normal and subsides within 2-3 days. We recommend scheduling your appointment with no major events for 7-10 days after.

Aftercare & Healing

What is the aftercare process?
First 24 Hours:
  • Blot lymph fluid gently every hour
  • Apply thin layer of provided aftercare balm
  • Avoid water on the treated area
Days 2-10:
  • Cleanse gently twice daily
  • Apply aftercare balm as directed
  • NO picking, scratching, or peeling
  • Avoid sweating, swimming, saunas
Long-term:
  • Always use SPF on treated areas
  • Avoid harsh skincare products directly on the area
  • Schedule annual touch-ups
Why does my PMU look so dark right after?
Don't panic! This is completely normal. The pigment appears darker initially because:
  • Pigment is sitting on the surface of the skin
  • Oxidation causes temporary darkening
  • The skin hasn't healed over the pigment yet
During healing, 30-50% of the color will fade as the top layer of skin exfoliates naturally. The true color emerges at the 4-6 week mark. This is why we schedule a touch-up appointment!
When can I wear makeup after my procedure?
Treated Area: Wait at least 10-14 days before applying makeup directly on the treated area. This allows the skin to fully heal and prevents infection.

Surrounding Area: You can wear makeup around (not on) the treated area after 24-48 hours. Just be careful not to touch the healing area.

First Touch-Up: After your touch-up appointment, follow the same healing protocol for best results.
